Randy Hoepker is in his second year as Instrumental Music Director at Vista Peak Preparatory High School in Aurora, where he teaches Band, Orchestra, Jazz Band and Guitar classes. Prior to Vista Peak, he taught for twenty-one years in the Des Moines and Southeast Polk Public Schools in Iowa. He is the founder and former director of the Central Iowa Youth Band, an honors ensemble of the finest young musicians in Iowa, and his school groups have performed with the Banda Sinfonica Juvenile de Yucatan (Mexico), Corpo Musicale (Italy), Kofu School Bands (Japan) and the Children’s Palace of Tianjin (China) among others. He has commissioned over 25 works for bands from composers in the USA, Canada, England, the Netherlands and Japan.
He holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in Music Education, Conducting, and Jazz from the University of Northern Iowa. He has extensive performance experience on saxophone (classical and jazz), guitar (jazz and classical) and bass guitar (jazz and rock), as well as additional study and performance on trumpet, flute, clarinet, percussion, string bass and other band instruments. Many of his students have been accepted to all-state bands, honor bands, held first chair in their school bands and gone on to major in music. Since coming to the Denver area, he has been become active as a jazz bassist with the Miguel Espinoza Ensemble.
